Hawaii Karate Museum Newspaper Archive

One of the missions of the Hawaii Karate Museum is to collect, archive, and display historic Karate articles. We have spent years searching through personal collections, reference materials, and microfilm to locate articles about Karate in Hawaii, and elsewhere in the world, particularly before World War II (December 1941). Our research is ongoing and this archive will be updated periodically. We will be posting English translations of the Japanese articles in the coming months.

We have decided to publish the index and articles on our website for the following reasons: (1) to make the materials freely available worldwide; (2) to make access to the materials as fair as possible; (3) to ensure that the collection will be archived by many Karate researchers, thus ensuring their preservation; and (4) to make the Japanese articles available for translation by Japanese language/Karate experts. Collectively, the articles reveal the important role of Hawaii in Karate history.

These articles speak for themselves. If an article mentions a Karate instructor, we list it.

We ask that readers please not host these articles on other websites. You are welcome to link to this page and to the individual articles. If you refer to any of these articles, please identify the Hawaii Karate Museum Newspaper Archive as the source.

We also ask that you consider sending us copies of any Karate articles from before 1950 that we might have missed. We would like to archive all Karate articles from before that date. If you enjoy this resource, please consider making a donation.

The Hawaii Karate Museum is a division of the Hikari Institute, a Hawaii non-profit corporation and federally tax exempt organization under IRC 501(c)(3). We depend upon public support to fund our research and education programs. A donation of any size would be greatly appreciated and we will send you a receipt for your tax records. There are two ways to make monetary donations to the Hikari Institute:

  • Please click on the PayPal image to make a secure online
credit card payment (by VISA or Master Card).
